FiveM upvotes or advertising — which is better?
They solve different problems. Upvotes buy position in the place players already browse. Advertising buys attention somewhere else and has to drag people to the client. For most servers upvotes convert better per unit spent, because the audience is already looking for a server to join.
The fundamental difference
Upvotes put you in front of people who have already opened the server browser. They have the game running and they are choosing where to spend their evening. The intent could not be higher.
Advertising — Discord servers, forums, TikTok, YouTube, paid ads — reaches people who were doing something else. You have to interrupt them, interest them, and get them to launch a game and find you.
Why intent matters so much
The difference in conversion is not marginal. Someone scanning the discovery grid is one click from joining. Someone watching a clip on TikTok has to remember your server exists, open FiveM, search for you correctly, and connect.
That path leaks at every step.
Where advertising genuinely wins
- Building an identity. Upvotes make you visible; they do not make you memorable. A recognisable server with a following gets recommended, which is worth more than any position.
- Reaching people who do not browse. Some players only ever join servers a friend or a streamer showed them.
- Community depth. Discord growth, event turnout, returning players. Position does nothing for these.
Where upvotes win
- Cold start. A new server with no audience has nobody to advertise to. Position works with zero existing reach.
- Cost per arrival. Generally lower, because the audience is pre-qualified.
- Speed. Hours, not weeks.
The sensible combination
Position for the flow of new arrivals, community work so those arrivals stick and bring others. Servers that only buy position refill a leaking bucket forever. Servers that only build community grow slowly because so few people ever see them.
Sequencing
If you have nothing, start with position — you need arrivals before community work has material to act on. If you have an engaged community and no visibility, ask them to vote before you spend anything.
